General technical problems

Aborted or failed launches

  • Mission aborted due to gas loss during balloon inflation
  • Partially failed mission due to communication problems between onboard computer and Mission Control and consequently uncontrolled release of lifting gas from the balloon valve.The mission quitted before the target quote, reaching an altitude of 10.000 mt rather than 20.000 mt.

General technical problems

  • Old telecommunication system usually didn't work because of infrastructural problems indepenent from company dynamics
  • During a test, after the launch the probe communication was lost because of inadequate infrastructure from the service provider. We decided to improve our platform with a high reliability high performance telecommunication system
  • Balloon material not suitable to sustain relevant differential pressure levels: during one test the balloon rapidly lose altitude because it expanded to much at the point of opening a hole in the film
  • Design of high altitude compressor complex
  • Difficulties in arranging the cutting system
  • During launch operations, strong winds caused difficult balloon management and caused creeps and holes
  • Difficult recoveries depending on landing zone
  • Balloon inflation takes a long time (but the gas tanks adapter helps in shortening this phase)
  • Difficulties in integrating remote sensing equipments with our on board computer
  • 3D printers sometimes need deep maintenance to properly work
  • Lifting gas valve needs to be improved to further reduce gas leaks
  • New telecommunication systems too big to be arranged on the gondola → a new gondola is required
